No 17th century physician's medical desk could be complete without some apothecary jars filled with strange and pungent ingredients. In the time of Dr Arnott, a real physician who once lived on Mary King's Close, it was essential to analyse and sample patients' internal fluids in order to concoct them an effective cure.
A jar of Spiders would certainly indicate that the apothecary in question had been attempting to draw out poison. Specifically, spiders' webs were often used to stop nosebleeds and heal wounds, while swallowing a spider was believed to cure a fever.
Fortunately, our spiders taste rather more like Fizzy Jelly Sweets with a sour twist!
