The Plague Doctor Whisky Glass is decorated with an engraved image of Edinburgh's infamous physician, Dr George Rae. At a time when Edinburgh faced perhaps one of the darkest periods in its history, he stepped up to the challenge of treating hundreds of people infected with the plague.
Roughly a third of the population succumbed to the disease, but George lived thanks to the protective leather costume he wore. Effectively, this helped to keep out the fleas that passed on Yersinia Pestis, the deadly pathogen that caused the plague.
