No 17th century physician's medical desk could be complete without some apothecary jars filled with strange and pungent ingredients. In the time of Dr Arnott, a real physician who once lived on Mary King's Close, it was essential to analyse and sample patients' internal fluids in order to concoct them an effective cure.
According to humoralism, four bodily fluids - blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm (or mucous) - determined a person's temperament and an imbalance led to certain illnesses. Fortunately, our Black Bile tastes rather more like Blackcurrant Preserve!
